URBANA, Ohio (February 15, 2012) - A new exhibit, CHARLOTTE GORDON: VESSELS, will be on view at the Miller Center for Visual Arts on the campus of Urbana University, from March 23 - May 5, Thursdays and Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. The Opening Reception with the artist is on day, March 23, 2012 from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. There is no charge for either the Opening Reception or the exhibit, but donations to the Miller Center for Visual Arts are welcome.

Gordon, presently the curator at the Springfield Museum of Art, received her BFA degree from Tulane University’s Newcomb College, followed by a year of advanced training at North Carolina’s Penland School of Crafts. Specializing in ceramics, her current interests lie in multi-media sculptural and installation art, and VESSELS combines this core interest with new works in sculpted paper forms.

The boat vessels consist of ceramic forms based on the shape of a dugout, or pirogue. A simple form with graceful lines, not necessarily built to transport objects, but to convey the spirit or soul. These same forms transposed into paper are translucent and yet more unseaworthy, yielding a vessel capable of transporting not much more than the light it holds.

The container vessels are of the same sensibility and ethereal qualities. One grouping, from the “Suspended Travel” series, features an open bowl/boat/vessel form suspended at the tip of a peaked, conical base. Some of these are perforated. “There is a moment when a sieve becomes a holding vessel, when what is not needed is strained away and a vestige is held- spared, sacred and safe.
