INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) conducted the league’s first meeting of the G-MAC Athletic Administrators Council (AAC) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR) Council at the NCAA Convention on Friday (Jan. 13). The council members completed an extensive slate of business as the G-MAC continued to make strides in its development as an intercollegiate athletic conference.
Included in the business completed by the G-MAC Joint Council was the approval of league schedules for the 2012-13 academic year. Conference members’ teams not already aligned with another conference’s schedule for 2012-13 will be competing against fellow G-MAC opponents in the league schedule. The schedules will allow for conference championship competition for the student-athletes in advance of possible active NCAA Division II status.

The G-MAC, which has applied for membership as a NCAA Division II conference with the goal of competing as an active NCAA D-II conference in 2013-14, will conduct 12 conference championships in 2012-13.

“It is the goal of the G-MAC to immediately develop a conference that will provide the quality conference championship opportunities and administrative support expected of NCAA Division II conferences,” said G-MAC Commissioner Tom Daeger.

“With the goal of beginning competition as an active NCAA Division II member conference in 2013-14, the conference will be incorporating a structure that will allow the league to be functioning, as a NCAA Division II conference is expected to function, from the outset.”

In addition to the steps taken towards incorporating league schedules and championships for the 2012-13 academic year, the Joint Council continued work on structuring championship formats and sport operating codes.

“The councils will be developing the sport operating codes and fine-tuning conference governance policies over the course of the next few months,” added Daeger. “It has been an exciting few months for the Conference as we continue to evaluate our progress towards developing a premier intercollegiate athletic conference.”

Dr. Alan Geist, director of athletics at Cedarville University, was elected as the Chair of the AAC and will serve the group, which consists of the athletic director and senior woman administrator from each of the G-MAC’s member institutions, for a two-year term. David Williams, Director of Athletics at Kentucky Wesleyan College, was elected as the AAC’s Vice-Chair.

The FAR Council tabbed Dr. Anthony Milburn, faculty athletics representative at Central State University, as the Chair. Dr. Elizabeth Kavran, faculty athletic representative at Ursuline College, was elected as Vice-Chair.

The Chairs of the respective councils were also in attendance for the NCAA Division II Business Session on Saturday.

At the session, the NCAA Division II membership passed all 16 legislative proposals on the voting agenda including three membership proposals. With the approval of the membership proposals, the NCAA Division II Management Council lifted a moratorium on membership at its post-Convention meeting providing the possibility for the G-MAC’s application to be considered by the NCAA Membership Committee in February.

“Friday’s Joint Council Meeting was a great opportunity for our league to conduct our business in conjunction with the NCAA Convention,” stated Daeger. “We commend the NCAA Division II membership on the business conducted in the legislative session and we are appreciative that our application for membership will be considered by the NCAA Membership Committee in February.”

If recognized by the NCAA Membership Committee in February, the G-MAC will enter an educational assessment program and work towards meeting benchmarks necessary to compete as an active NCAA Division II member conference in 2013-14 and beyond.
