Urbana Upends Ursuline 94-71

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio (January 21, 2012) – The Urbana University women’s basketball team broke through on the road on Saturday afternoon, defeating their future conference foe Ursuline College by the score of 94-71. Urbana entered the game sporting a 1-10 record away from home this season, but the offense exploded for its second best output of the season. The Blue Knight’s shot better than 50% from the field and bested their season scoring average by 33 points. It’s the second time in the past two weeks the Urbana has topped 90 points in a game.

Urbana actually trailed the Arrows 41-38 at the half, but the Blue Knights erupted for 56 points in the second half. The visitors also turned up the heat on defense, holding Ursuline to just 30 second half points while causing 20 turnovers on the afternoon.

All five Blue Knight starters scored in double figures, led by freshman guard Ciara Geiger’s 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting from the field. Geiger also contributed 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Junior center Andrea Vogel controlled the paint with 14 points, on 6 of 8 shooting from the field. Vogel also tallied 7 rebounds and 5 blocks in the win. DeVonyea Johnson posted 11 points, 6 dimes, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals, and Katy Barkley chipped in 12 points and 6 more rebounds for the Blue Knights. Jackie Cousineau was in the zone from outside, connecting on 4 of 6 from deep for 12 points, and coming off the bench for the Blue Knights, Jessica Saffold scored 15 points and pulled down 7 rebounds.

The Blue Knights are now 4-3 under new head coach Maria Marchesano. Overall, Urbana improves to 6-11 and an even 3-3 vs. the D-II Ohio Independents. Ursuline is also 6-11, but the Arrows remain winless (0-3) vs. the D-II Ohio Independents. The Blue Knights travel to another future conference opponent next Saturday when they meet the Yellow Jackets from Cedarville University. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in Cedarville’s Callan Athletic Center.
