URBANA, Ohio (February 2, 2012) – The Blue Knight women’s basketball team proved they are peaking at the right time on Thursday night.  Urbana avenged a 29-point November loss to the Walsh Cavaliers by beating their guests 71-66 in front of the home crowd at the Grimes Center.

The win is Urbana’s fourth straight at home and it is the fourth straight victory against the NCAA D-II Ohio Independents, improving their season record vs. common opponents to 5-3 and 8-11 overall.  Walsh, meanwhile, falls to 12-12 and 2-3 vs. OIC opponents.

After one half of play, the game remained tight just like the teams’ first meeting in the season’s second game.  Urbana entered the break clinging to a 30-27 lead, but they flipped the script against the Cavs in the second half.  In Canton 75 days ago, Walsh ran away with the second half, outscoring Urbana 47-27 on their way to an 83-54 win.

On Thursday night, it was Urbana who took charge in the decisive second half, opening the frame on a 28-15 run to push their lead to 16 with 5 minutes to play.  Walsh closed the gap late with an effective full court press, but it was too little, too late as the Blue Knights held on for sweet revenge.

Urbana’s leading scorer back in November was Ciara Geiger with 10 points.  Four Blue Knights matched or beat that mark on Thursday night, led by DeVonyea Johnson’s 21.  Geiger played one of her better overall games.  The first-year guard tallied 19 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.  Andrea Vogel recorded a double-double, finishing with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.  Freshman Katy Barkley chipped in 10 points as well.

Urbana is home again on Saturday for a men’s and women’s doubleheader.  The Lady Knights tip off at 1:00 p.m. against Lindenwood University.  The men’s game with Malone University will follow at 3:00 p.m.  Following both games, Urbana will induct former Blue Knight basketball greats Brian Boysel and Mary (Jenkins) McBride into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
