Graham did not make it easy, though, as they slowed the pace down, limited possessions, and held the ball for the last shot in the first three periods, as well as bouts throughout the game while working the ball around the perimeter. That ball-control strategy as well as physical team defense by the Falcons helped to take away one key scorer in the Urbana arsenal, and hinder two others.
Urbana's Tristan Singer, who scored 20 points in the Climbers' 41-31 victory over Graham on January 6th, found his driving lanes shut off and he finished with 3 points. Center Zach Stillings, who entered the game as the fourth-leading scorer in the Dayton area at 20.5 points per game, had a workmanlike eleven points. According to Graham head coach Brook Cupps, it was the first time in Stillings' career reaching double-figures in scoring against Graham. Senior Karl Singer, although he led his team with 12 points, scored the first eight points of the game for his team, but did not score again until the fourth quarter.
Urbana (16-1, 8-0) led 10-9 after one period, 17-16 at the half, and 23-21 to start the final period. Both teams exploded for 16 points each on their way to the finish.
For Graham (6-3, 11-6), junior point guard Grant Goddard, entering the game averaging 8.8 points, knocked down four three-pointers on his way to a game-high 18 points, both career-highs for him. It was Goddard who kept his team close by scoring eleven in the fourth period.
Eighth-year Urbana coach Jeremy Dixon, winning his first division title, was singing the praises of his players afterward.
“Right here (winning the title) was our number one goal and we got it done, and it feels good,” said Dixon, “Graham doesn't make things easy for you, I mean, there's a reason why they have won seven titles in a row. Everytime they scored we found an answer for it.”
Graham head coach, Brook Cupps, knew his team had a good chance to pull off the victory, but could not quite seal the deal.
“We gave them some easy looks early and we could never really get the lead. If we could have gotten the lead I think we could have changed the way some things played out,” said Cupps. He continued, “It's a tribute to (Urbana), they made big plays down the stretch when they needed to, and that's the mark of a good team.”
Both teams finish their regular seasons on Saturday February 18 before gearing up for state tournament play.
