URBANA, Ohio (March 3, 2012) - After strong storms and lightning postponed Urbana University's Friday night lacrosse home opener, the teams tried again on Saturday morning. The Blue Knights and visiting Rams from Shepherd University were greeted by freezing temperatures, a few stray snow flakes and 30 mph winds. Shepherd handled the conditions best, defeating Urbana 21-6 in the Blue Knights' home opener.
Shepherd scored the game's first three goals, but Urbana had an answer early. Junior Emily Boerger scored the Blue Knights' first goal of the season 11 minutes into the contest. Freshman Hannah Walters tacked on another Urbana goal, the first of her collegiate career, two minutes later, and Urbana trailed 5-2.
From there, it was all Shepherd in the first half. The Rams scored 8 of the last nine goals of the period to take a commanding 13-3 halftime lead.
The visitors opened the second half with three straight goals to distance themselves from Urbana. Shepherd's Krista Tippett led all scorers with 5 goals. Urbana was led by Walters, who tallied a hat trick in her collegiate debut. Boerger finished with a pair of goals and freshman Taylor Andersen notched the first goal of her career in the second half.
A year ago, the Rams defeated Urbana 21-4. Shepherd improves to 3-0 with the victory. Next week, the Blue Knights (0-1) travel south on Spring Break. Urbana will play three games in four days, starting with Newberry College on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
